Beautiful adventure story Step into a magical adventure with Martin as he travels through space as a beam of light. Unsure of himself in this new world, Martin gains confidence and learns many lessons about himself. He also learns how to navigate through space and meets many challenges and characters on his journey to help his friend Amalius. This book will help young readers use their imagination and learn key lessons about friendship, confidence, strength and love. I highly recommend this book for both young readers as well as adults. Finally, a children's book where the message doesn’t feel like eating steamed broccoli Martin is a charming children’s book filled with imagination, humor, and plenty of heart. It gives young readers an entertaining way to explore courage, resilience, and the importance of keeping their inner light glowing.I LOVED how naturally the story encourages children to use their imaginations, look beyond appearances, stand up for what they believe, and understand that difficult feelings can lead to meaningful growth. The humor keeps the lessons engaging and prevents the wisdom from sounding like it arrived wearing a tie and carrying a clipboard.This is a warm, uplifting read with a lot to discuss after the final page. Children may come away feeling more confident, compassionate, and curious about the world... and parents may find themselves looking at ordinary sunlight with suspiciously poetic appreciation. Super glad this book exists This is one of my favorite books. I’ve probably read it 5 times. Each time is fresh. Each time, I feel lighter inside when I read it. Everything seems a little easier. Time flies by in a good way.There is a passage early in the book when Martin decides to become a beam of light. He concentrates really hard on becoming a beam of light and Poof! he is a light beam. For about 2 weeks after I read that, I found myself walking around imagining I was a light beam. But I didn’t become a light beam, so I started looking for light beams bouncing off of things and shining through things and shining on people. I am looking at light and thinking about light in new ways.Presto might be my favorite character. He shows up for about 10 seconds.Each time I read this book, I get something new from it. I read it at different levels because I am coming to it from different levels, and I’ve found it has something to offer at every level. For me, these are the best books.My favorite way to read it? Take my time with it. When I step away, let parts of it meld with the day. Pretend I’m living the parts that make me feel lightest, let those come alive for me. They really did come alive.There were a few weeks when I could see that I was living like one of the light beams trapped on the planet Amalius, who had forgotten it was a light beam. Those were not the greatest weeks, and I kept thinking about a particular scene in the book until finally I was motivated to change something.Then I saw a few kids walking to school. Each looked unhappy. They looked a bit like Martin might, before he met Amalius, and I wanted to give them a copy of the book. I wanted them to meet Amalius.I like Amalius. And I like Martin. There’s a roundness to his character, a balanced softness and wisdom that can see the people around him and can see far into his own future. His perspective is light and happy and not superficial.The story is timeless. I think it can make life better for people, for generations.I say this because life feels a bit lighter every time I read it, and that stays with me. And because it helped me see something about myself that I wanted to change, and I kept thinking about a certain part of the story until I made that change.I really love this book. But that’s just me. And the book is not 100% perfect - there is a sentence I am not thrilled with.
