Bad Habits That Can Block Your Spiritual Growth

If it feels like you’re doing your spiritual practice but are not seeing the progress and upliftment you seek, it may be because of habits that are sabotaging your efforts.

Your spiritual journey is the most exciting adventure there is. Yet, it can be frustrating if feels like you’re trying your best, but somehow you’re not breaking through. When that happens ask yourself, “Is there anything I’m doing that is unintentionally interfering with the very things I’m trying to achieve?” Sometimes, we get in our own way and can be our own worst enemy without realizing it. Here are a few things we sometimes do that can frustrate our spiritual journey.

Impatience

Often when we’re on the spiritual path, we want enlightenment right away. We had the spiritual awakening and can confuse that with spiritual attainment. The awakening is the beginning of your spiritual journey. It’s so exciting. Although we may not realize it at first, this road is going to be a lifelong pursuit. Once we’ve had the awakening, it’s hard to go back, because we’ve seen life from a different perspective. Whatever you are in your spiritual journey, acknowledge it’s a learning process. Like learning any language, art or skill, you’re going keep getting better at it with time. You want to stick with it, yet pace yourself. Take the long-view in reaching your spiritual potential. You don’t want to go too slow, yet don’t expect overnight changes. Patience and persistence is the key. In the aura, patience shows up in the auric field as a beautiful emerald light. It shows that this person lets things unfold in divine time.

Peer Pressure

This can be a real challenge, because if you’re pursuing your spiritual work and those around you did not have the awakening as you did, you may feel like the odd ball, that maybe you shouldn’t pursue you spiritual aspiration. You recognize the value of the spiritual life, but you’re listening to the voice of others. You have to be true to yourself. Remember, we are first children of the divine. We’re here in this earth to interact, love and support each other, but in the end, we’re accountable and answerable to the Divine for our actions on Earth. If others don’t understand your spiritual life, love them all the more. Show them how much you care about them. If they really loves you, they’ll eventually realize their love for you is more important than if you totally agree with each other. It’s okay to disagree on some things. You can mutually respect each other and still have life-enriching relationships. At the same time, it’s a good idea to build an environment around you that is supportive. Seek out others on a similar spiritual journey, so that there is that sense of fellowship and spiritual community.

Ignorance

In the spiritual journey and like anything in life, you need knowledge. You need true understanding. Mystical knowledge is not acquired easily. Metaphysical training was originally delegated to the secret mystery schools and ashrams. You had to be initiated into these schools, and it was not easy to enter. The hierophants and gurus wanted to make sure the student was ready for this work. Because of the greater global awakening that’s going on now, the Divine is opening up some of the secret knowledge to be more readily available for the world. Many people are hungry for it, but you have to be more discerning than ever to recognize what is a value. Not all spiritual teachings are of equal value. You have to question the source of where you’re getting the spiritual teaching from. And then make sure you are trying out the teaching for yourself to judge its value. Plus, there is only so far we can learn on our own. At some point, the aspiring soul, needs the qualified spiritual teacher to help cross the higher mystical bridges. As the ancient saying goes, “When the student is ready, the teacher appears.” You can overcome any internal or external challenge you may have as you pursue your spiritual growth. Periodically challenge yourself. Maintain your integrity yet be flexible. Sometimes there are course corrections to make. The Divine will always be there to lovingly support you, but you have to do your own spiritual growing.
